Waaia A Grade One-Day Premiers
Waaia A Grade cricket side have taken out the Cricket Shepparton’s One Day Final against Central Park.
The day started off with winning the toss and batting. Sam Trower and Reinhardt Engler formed a strong partnership after an early wicket which steadied the ship. However, some good bowling from Central Park put Waaia on the back foot for most of the batting innings. Sam Trower was the standout scoring a well made 37 before being run out. Some handy runs from Jordy Cleeland and Brenton Low at the back end raised the score to 129 all out in the last over. A score that looked well below par, however, playing at home meant that the crowd advantage was in play.
In the bowling innings Central Park got off to a flyer with a clear message sent to make the runs as early as possible. Only 2 down at drinks and already on 70 runs the game looked close to being over. However, a match winning spell from Connor Brown of 4/26 kept Waaia in the game. After the first drinks Central Park lost 6/18 as Waaia completely turned around the game. A collapse of wickets from some good bowling and pressure in the field meant Waaia were now in the box seat. A great catch from South African import Quinton Venter set the crowd a light and gave the home team the extra advantage. Venter then claimed the last week of the game trapping their last batsman LBW to give Waaia victory and premiers of the one day format.
Connor Brown was named best on ground for his bowling efforts.
Waaia will now look to gear up for the Haisman Shield finals and look to achieve some bigger success in the coming weeks.
